Impacts - Climate Change
Hurricanes, Climate Change, and U.S. Leadership
When I learned Bryan Norcross would be with us this month, the memories came flooding back. In September 1992 Concept Communiqués produced its first issue of ENERGY NEWS. It was an inauspicious beginning. Isaac Jones’ president’s message began “Hats Off to all the people at FPL and to all our members who are giving selfless hours to get our community back on line after the awesome destruction Hurricane Andrew inflicted on us.” Herb Gager’s Program Corner gave no mention of Andrew. An FPL employee himself, he was too busy working round the clock to change his column which was written before the storm. Isaac wrote of “rebuilding” and “helping our neighbors in need.” We cancelled the meeting that monththere was too much work to do in south Dade. It was a grim but very human time in South Florida...
Local SolutionsThe Long Road Begins
Attendees of the Blueprint for Cooling Down Florida Conference, organized by the Alliance for Florida’s Future and the Natural Resources Defense Council in St. Petersburg on February 17th, must have been struck by the sheer scope of the task facing us if we ever hope to get a handle on the global warming problem...
Welcome to Atlantis-Dade County
The most perplexing question facing those concerned about global climate change is: will we ever get serious about implementing solutions? ...
Florida would do well to heed AGU’s call
On January 28th, The American Geophysical Union announced that it had adopted a position statement on "Global Climate Change and Greenhouse Gases". The entire statement follows, but concludes: "AGU recommends the development and evaluation of strategies such as emissions reduction, carbon sequestration, and adaptation to the impacts of climate change. AGU believes that the present level of scientific uncertainty does not justify inaction in the mitigation of human-induced climate change and/or the adaptation to it." ...
Energy Engineers and Global Climate Change, Part III
Previously we introduced the causal relationship between the man-made Enhanced Greenhouse Effect (EGE) and global climate change, and our scientific knowledge of EGE. Man-made greenhouse gases, caused primarily by the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have continued to accumulate in the atmosphere every day since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution over 200 years ago, and a "runaway" greenhouse threatens to throw our climate into chaos...
The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect, Part II
Last month I introduced you to the early history of our knowledge of the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect (EGE)-the underlying cause behind our concerns about global climate change. Unlike climate change, there is no uncertainty about EGE and this article will continue to develop the history of our knowledge of this atmospheric disease, a disease which, unchecked, threatens to overwhelm us all...
The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect, Part I
Easy to overlook in the confusing rhetoric of the climate change debate is the fact that there is no uncertainty about the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect. Why is that significant? We’re all familiar with the concept of cause and effect. The disease and the symptom. The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect (EGE) is a subtle yet pernicious atmospheric disease. Global climate change is its symptom. It is the enhanced greenhouse effect that we need to mitigate...
How many tons of CO2 are you responsible for?
Don Holte, ASHRAE's president, made the most of a brief appearance last month to deliver a frank and incisive assessment of the problems, and the solutions, facing his organization and other practitioners in the building environment as we head into the 21st century...
Mitigating the Risks of Global Climate Change
Last month I had an opportunity to listen to the principal exponents of the global climate change debate as they presented their views at a seminar in Coral Gables. Beyond Business Global Climatic Change, was presented by Employers Reinsurance Corporation, the second largest reinsurer in the United States and one of the largest reinsurance groups in the world. For those not familiar with reinsurers, they insure the insurance industry. The largest reinsurers, such as Munich Re and Swiss Re, are based in Europe...

Clean Power, Clean Fuels, Clean Transportation
Clean power, clean fuels, clean transportation. These concepts are very much a part of our lives these days, and they've appeared prominently in state and national energy legislative efforts while the chapter has been enjoying, if not sweltering, its annual summer vacation...
